On Tuesday, January 25, 2022 our Safe Traffic & Transportation Committee was joined by LAPD Valley Traffic Officer Joel Flores who shared with us some recent updates:
There were 19 traffic-related fatalities in the Foothill Division in 2021 - 2 of which were in Sunland-Tujunga.
Due to the cutbacks in funding to LAPD by our L.A. City Council, there are fewer Valley Traffic Officers to monitor speeders and other traffic offences.
LAPD officers no longer write up accident reports due to these cutbacks. They will show up at the scene of an accident if there are injuries, damage to City property, or the accident was related to a DUI, speeding or some other offence - but don't expect to get a traffic report.
If there are no injuries in your accident, you can go to this website: "CORS" (WWW.LAPDONLINE.ORG) Community Online Reporting Service, and enter the information yourself, so there is a record of your traffic collision.
Officer Flores continues to monitor our streets, especially those known as speedways, and is writing up tickets. Additionally, there is a volunteer surveillance group, trained by LAPD, that goes out and tracks speed with radar guns to help with the shortage of police. When speeders are tracked, LAPD can use this information to generate a ticket.
We invite you to join us at our next STAT meeting on Feb. 22nd at 6 p.m. on Zoom. For more information, contact STNC STAT Chair Pat Kramer at [email protected].
