Hello, everyone! As the Chair of the City’s Public Safety Committee, traffic safety is a top priority for the Councilwoman, and our office has worked closely with the Los Angeles Department of Transportation to bring a myriad of engineering improvements to our communities. In October of 2020, three left-turn phasing signals were installed in our district - one in North Hills, one in Sylmar, and one here in Tujunga at the Foothill/Apperson intersection.

In the second phase of this project, two more left-turn phasing signals are now being installed. The first signal, here at the intersection of Foothill and Tujunga Canyon Blvd, was completed last week, and you can see a quick video here of the installation and activation: https://www.facebook.com/MonicaRodriguezCD7/videos/1821028888105074/?__so__=channel_tab&__rv__=all_videos_card. The second location in Mission Hills will be activated shortly.

Foothill Boulevard in Sunland-Tujunga is a street on the LADOT’s High Injury Network, due to the high number of collisions resulting in serious injuries and traffic fatalities on this major artery in our community. The intersection of Foothill Blvd and Tujunga Canyon Blvd alone has seen over 66 collisions since 2011. Implementing traffic safety measures such as left-turn phasing signals will help to make our streets safer by reducing collisions.

In addition to the left-turn phasing signals being installed this year, the Councilwoman secured $4 million in federal earmark grant funds to address traffic issues at intersections and streets throughout our district. This funding will go to eighteen different traffic safety projects throughout our district, with installations expected to begin in 2022. Planned projects in Sunland-Tujunga include:

1). the addition of a new left turn phasing signal at Foothill and Mt. Gleason
2). the addition of a new emergency hybrid beacon at Foothill and Machrea to be installed in front of our LAFD 74 station to protect our firefighters as they pull out of the station
3). the addition of new pedestrian hybrid beacon crossing at Foothill and Wyngate
4). installation of four new speed feedback signs to help slow traffic on this busy Foothill corridor
