Healthy Buildings, Healthy Places
Posted on 03/22/21
Greetings from the City Planning Urban Design Studio,
We are pleased to invite you and your organization to participate in a special webinar intended for community-based organizations and NGOs on March 23 to share your perspective and expertise that will help shape an important new City initiative addressing the role of design in community health and equity.
Hearing from those who have a unique role in community engagement and the intersection of land use planning and community health is our priority in developing the guide. We will convene virtual webinars beginning in March. The first webinar is on March 23rd at 11:00am. Please sign up by clicking the button below if you are interested in participating. If you are interested in attending the webinar in Spanish (at 1:30pm) please scroll down for the Spanish registration link.
This new initiative, called the Healthy Buildings, Healthy Places Design Guide builds upon the Plan for a Healthy Los Angeles and the Citywide Design Guidelines by reinforcing linkages between health, equity, and planning; and recognizing the role that building design can play in promoting favorable health outcomes, particularly in communities of color that have long suffered from disinvestment.
The guide will introduce practical strategies that place people first in the design of buildings and public spaces, through measures such as: adaptable indoor/outdoor common areas that animate shared spaces; placement of staircases to promote physical activity; usable balconies and outdoor rooms to provide areas of respite from stress and overcrowding; improved indoor air and daylighting; and special design considerations for at-risk populations in group living quarters such as nursing homes, which have been hard-hit by COVID-19.
You may also begin to share ideas on what you would like to see included in the guide by visiting the Healthy Buildings, Healthy Places Storymap. We ask that you help spread the word to your partner organizations so more voices can be part of the conversation.
Sincerely,
Urban Design Studio
