► Last week four S-T residents, members of Foothill LAPD's Volunteer Community Patrol (VCP), assisted officers in chase cars to apprehend 8 vehicles traveling >10 mph over posted limits. Four received citations, four got warnings.
► Nearly another 20 speeders will receive warning letters thanks to this task force. When chase vehicles are tied up, volunteers photograph plates and record speed so owners get a polite letter stating its location and speed. Occasionally, some drivers weren't even authorized to use the owner's vehicle!
► One high-speed offender was recently released from prison, had no drivers license, no registration, no insurance, and no bill of sale for his newly purchased vehicle. Aside from injury or death, imagine YOUR snakes-nest of legal problems if he had crashed into you or your family! He's now off the road till he makes everything legal.
► VCP have been trained and drilled on LAPD's calibrated LIDAR (Light Detection and Ranging) "guns." When an excessive speeder is clocked well above the limit, volunteers radio the vehicle description and plates to an LAPD chase car down the road who pulls the offender over.
► Volunteers received lots of thumbs-ups, friendly honks, and support from non-speeders. Dates and locations of anti-speeding task forces are not released.
► So please stay under the LIDAR! And promote safe driving to your friends! LIDAR doesn't lie!
