Slurry seal applications this week in Sunland-Tujunga

Hello, everyone. I hope you all continue to stay safe and well. This coming week, the Bureau of Street Services will be applying a slurry seal to more than fifty five different street segments throughout our communities (see the map attached with scheduled days for the work). As part of Streets LA's normal maintenance, a slurry seal application is applied to prevent water penetration into the asphalt, usually 3-5 years after a street is resurfaced. This inhibits oxidation of the oils from the pavement, deters asphalt cracking, prevents water from seeping into the sub-base, and extends the serviceable life of the street, thereby reducing the need for future repaving. 

Often, people have questions regarding the difference between resurfacing and applying a slurry seal. Resurfacing removes the top asphalt wearing surface to install new asphalt pavement. Slurry is a sealant applied at approximately 1/8th inch thickness as a preservative application. Applying a slurry seal is a cost-effective technique that maintains the existing street condition, sealing the cracks and gaps that allow water to infiltrate to the base and weaken the street. This method adds another 5-7 years to the life expectancy of the asphalt.

Others may have questions on how to request for a street to be resurfaced. Our office works closely with Streets LA, and continues to advocate for streets in our area that are in bad condition or in need of resurfacing. For instance, this fiscal year we have several sections coming up that we have been advocating to resurface, including: Sherman Grove between Foothill and Kyle St, Estepa Drive between Arama and the dead-end, Haines Canyon between Estepa and Elmhurst, multiple residential streets near Pali Avenue (including Pali Ave, La Reina, Mina Rica, Harman, Hamilton, and Creemore Place), and multiple streets in the residential neighborhood just north of Sunland Park (including Hillrose St, Oswego, Turnbow, and part of Fenwick), among others - see the attached map from Streets LA.
